THIS IS MY FAVORITE.
June 4, 1882 – November 20, 1918
John Bauer’s illustrations shaped my childhood like no other artist and I’m still completely in love with the darkly enchanted world he created. He will always be one of my main sources for inspiration, even if it’s not all that visible in my own art. In the books where his illustrations appeared I knew every story by heart and I still hear them in my Grandmother’s voice. The 5-year-old me would scold her if she tried to skip even one little word while reading me my bedtime story. And we always had to look at the pictures for a long, long time…
Years later, I learned that we share the same birthday.
I wrote a short piece about him a few months back over at the Belladonna Blog: Fragile beauties and dark forests - the art of John Bauer
Sir Ian McKellen came to visit Chew Valley School on 17th October 2014. He had this important message for the students gathered outside the library to catch a glimpse of the actor and Stonewall champion. (X)
